Babysitter-Services.com’s point is not to scare you. Most babysitter services recommend high quality and dependable sitters and nanny help. Our point is to encourage you to remain vigilant. Babysitters are interacting with your child when you are not around. Communication with your child’s nanny is important, not just to ensure the sitter is interacting properly with your child, but also to check on your child her or himself! Sitters can provide valuable insight and shed light on issues regarding your child which you were not previously aware.

Remember to talk to your babysitter after you return home from work, evening out, etc. and ask your child’s nanny (i) what they did with your child during the time you were out (what games did they play?, did the sitter help your child with their homework? In what areas are they excelling/having trouble with?); (ii) were there any problems while you were away? If so, discuss in detail; (iii) How did your child behave?; (iv) Does the sitter or nanny help have any questions, concerns, or comments, about your child and the time they spent together?

Remember to talk to your child after you return from being out, to ask them about their time with the sitter or nanny help. Ask: (i) what did you do today/last night/over the weekend?; (ii) did anything silly happen?; (iii) did anything happy, funny or sad happen?; (iv) what was your favorite part of the day?; (v) what was your least favorite part of the day?; (vi) Do you like [name of babysitter]? Why or why not? Try not to lead your child to the answer you are (or are not) looking for.

Once in a while, come home unannounced if possible. This keeps your sitter or nanny help on his/her feet (not knowing when to expect your arrival) and lets you in on their babysitter services, relationship with your child, and interaction in the middle of the babysitting session (as opposed to the very end when your child is asleep, etc..).

If you cannot ever come home unannounced, consider installing a hidden nanny video camera – especially if you suspect any wrongdoing. In any case, a nanny cam can be a great source of peace-of-mind.
